Chapter 11

ADAM WOKE to Pepper licking his face. He could smell the pepper spray used on his dog. He quietly thanked God Pepper hadn’t been killed in the attack. He felt a trickle of blood on his face and the back of his left shoulder stung as if it was on fire. He sat up to get his bearings and heard someone running through the woods.

He touched his shoulder and felt a small wet spot. Adam looked at his hand and saw blood. When he felt strong enough, he stood and staggered a bit until he got his bearings.

Adam checked his pockets and found his cell phone and wallet. He dialed 911 to report the vicious attack. Within five minutes of his call, an ambulance arrived as well as Seamus police officer Steven Miller.

“Are you okay?” Steven asked in concern.

“I’m just wonderful, doesn’t it look like it, Officer?” Adam said curtly as he sat on the bumper of the ambulance holding Pepper’s leash.

As the Emergency Medical Technicians examined Adam and tended to his wounds, Steven stood by looking worried.

“What?” Adam said.

“Why don’t you tell me what happened?”

“Pepper growled at some bushes near the benches and I got spooked, so we turned around to go home. I felt something hit me in the back hard and I fell over. I smashed my face on the pavement and was kind of out of it for a few seconds. Then I felt something stinging my shoulder. When I tried to get up, whoever it was drove their knee into my back and I hit my head again. When I woke up, I heard them running through the woods and Pepper was here licking my face.”

“Did you get a look at them?”

“No, but I think Pepper got a chunk of them. It sounded like she bit them and I can smell pepper spray on her.”

“Did they take anything?”

“No, nothing at all.”

An EMT asked Adam if he wanted to go to the hospital but he refused and signed a release form.

The ambulance crew finished up and left, but Steven stayed to flush Pepper’s eyes with water.

“I listened to your voice mail when I got free. How did you get your money and card back?” Steven asked.

“A guy I had coffee with found it and gave it back. However, the guy’s a nut job, not a hero.”

“Where were you around ten a.m.?”

“At work, why?”

“Can anyone vouch for that?”

“Wendy was training me to be manager of the store and Tiffany was working the front counter. Again why?”

“Around two o’clock today, I found the redheaded kid who took your money when I stopped by his apartment to speak with him.”

“What’d he say?”

“Not much. He was dead.” Steven watched Adam for a reaction.

Adam almost tripped over a crack in the pathway. After a moment, the dizziness ceased and he was able to regain his balance.

“Dead? You’re not accusing me of killing him, are you?” Adam asked frantically

“No one is accusing anyone right now. I haven’t told anyone you got the money and card back yet because I wanted to be the one to ask you about it.
